Oak framed houses

More recently, we have experience and privilege of building some oak framed houses and barns.

As with barn conversions, these builds require a different mindset - and skill set, to traditional building. There are considerations when dealing with large oak beams. The size and characteristics of this natural material means that there is often movement and cracking over time, which is part of the charm of these houses, but it's important that our customers understand what to expect with these types of homes. Of course, if the building and planning is not done correctly, this can cause problems, so it's important to work with specialist and experienced companies for the manufacture of the oak frames.

One of the unique and exciting parts of oak framed homes is the opportunity for our customer to work with the manufacturer to help design to mitigate as many of the potential issues as possible. On our latest project, we worked with an organisation who spent time with our customer working through and perfecting the design, choosing the oak, and enabling the customer visit the factory to see their own oak beams being milled! They even offer the opportunity for the customer to stay in an oak framed house overnight to get a feel for their new home!

An oak frame houses give the opportunity for a really unique home both in terms of design and finish. For example, oak beams can be shot-blasted for a finish which exposes the grain of the wood, or you might have oil-finish beams, which bring a different finish which that may attract less debris and dust.

In summary, oak framed houses are popular because of their uniqueness and character, which can difficult to recreate using brickwork. Particularly if you have a desire more a more natural aesthetic, this can be a really fulfilling way to design and build your new home.

As with all build-types, there are some limitations that it's helpful to be aware of from the outset. For example, oak framed homes can be more tricky to design when it comes to the interior, due to the positioning of beams. This can particularity impact kitchen designs and bedroom storage spaces, but most challenges can be overcome with the right thought and preparation in the initial design phase.

Bungalows

We believe that bungalows are great to build, as well as great to live in.
What makes them particularly exciting is the opportunity to design them in a way that they are fit for both the current needs, and the future needs of our customer. For example, all rooms, as well as patio and garden spaces, can easily be made accessible.

In general, bungalows provide a lot of privacy, as the neighbouring homes tend to be further away due to the larger plots that they're built on. The ease with which you can create wet rooms and efficient storage spaces can be very appealing and ultimately result in a unique space that is easy to maintain and creates easy living. The ability to extend and modify your bungalow over time can also be an attractive proposition.
